Usually it is April when we see a resurgence of families at StrongStart due to the milder weather. Although we are still getting a healthy number of families attending, we are still waiting for the spring rush. Hopefully May brings us some sunny days and above zero temperatures. Ha! Hope to see you soon!
March is coming in like a lamb. I hope the beautiful weather gets lots of families out of the house. Winter can feel so long here. But there are many wonderful people at StrongStart and the Rotary Play Centre waiting to cheer you. The easiest way to get through the winter season with small kids is get outside. The 2nd best way is to come to our play based, parent participation learning centres.
StrongStart programs don’t run during the school spring break March 18 – April 1. Rotary Play Centre, though, is only closing from March 25 – April 1. If you haven’t visited the CDC centre, March 18th – 22nd might be a good week to give it a try.
The Pre-school Health Round-up is a FUN event. We try to make it engaging for kids and parents alike. There will be lots of interesting activities for kids and valuable information for parents. I always enjoy being a part of this event because it is so supportive of families.
The Totem Mall is a new partner this spring. We are hoping the venue will add an element of excitement while making it easier for families to participate. The convenient parking is the best part. Please plan to spend about an hour with your little ones.
February can be a challenging month for young families in our community. I start to feel the weight of winter sitting on my shoulders during this month. We have Family Day to look forward to this year, but there are active events to get out of the house almost every day of the week. Getting out is trickier with small children but the reward of finding fun, socializing and engaging in learning activities pays off. It’s healthy for kids and valuable to parents, too.
Visit StrongStart or the Rotary Play Centre. It’s free and drop-in and can dramatically increase your child’s confidence in group learning environments.
Try Families in Motion to learn more about physical literacy, not just to be fit but also to be happy. Moving bodies are happy bodies.
If you’re a dad, uncle, grandpa or family friend, consider trying Daddy and Meevents. If you’re a mom, encourage a male caregiver to give it a try. It’s free and focused on play. Play builds relationships and relationships are the pathway to all learning.

As play becomes the hot button topic in our early learning conversations, I still find myself struggling to explain how play fits into a school day. Old thought patterns about play persist: it’s a filler activity or we’ll play when the work is done. The toughest one is the connection between play and learning. This article from the National Association for the Education of Young Children gets the conversation started about how play is not as simple as we might have thought.
If you are looking for a new place to play, visit one of the local StrongStart centres. A ECE is always on site to answer questions and provide interesting play opportunities. By playing in the school, next to the Kindergarten class, you are sending your child a powerful message that school is fun and playing is the way to learn.

Tonight was our biggest Daddy and Me gym night. We had 16 dads and 21 kids out to Robert Ogilvie Elementary. These kids got 60 minutes or more of active play. I am so pleased to be a part of a community where Dads are valued and physical activity is a priority. What a great night!
